About Me

Hello. I'm Maeve O'Briant, a disabled multi-media artist based in Hastings, England.

My work primarily deals with my experience living in a disabled body and the clash between this experience and societal expectations. In this way, I render society as the disabling force as opposed to my body, and I focus on forgiving my body for its differences.

I live with fibromyalgia and endometriosis, both of which have altered my ability to move through space and society in a traditional fashion. Increasing symptoms have forced me back to my roots - painting and other forms of art-making - to sustain myself emotionally and financially, and for that I thank my illnesses and the oppressive society in which they reside. Every purchase made by you helps me continue to exist in this non-conformist life I've created that sits at the margins of regular society, enabling me to survive.

I grew up in Seattle, Washington before studying Fine Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and completing my studies in Art History at the University of Sussex. I have now permanently settled in the UK and draw inspiration from the breathtaking and healing Sussex landscape.
